Several Lecturers Lose Jobs as University Scrap Courses
The University of Nairobi (UoN) has suspended ten (10) general undergraduate courses from the list of courses offered at the university.
Communication Skills, Fundamentals of Development and its Applications, Human Health, Law in Society, Environmental Science, Chemistry and its Applications, Science and Technology in Development, Elements of Philosophy, Elements of Economics and HIV/AIDS are no longer offered at the university. Academic Year 2022/2023.
Vice Chancellor of the University (DVC) Academic Affairs Prof. Julius Okengo, also a professor of human anatomy, in a memo to the head of the department dated September 19, 2022; The university said the decision was taken after a special senate meeting on September 8, 2022, so they should be revoked.
“With a copy of this memo, the Director of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is requested to log them together,” Professor Okeng’o said in a memo forwarded to the Vice Chancellor of the University, Director of ICT. , Academic Registrar and Dean of Faculty.
Earlier this year, the university announced new plans to cut courses after more than 250 courses in 2021, signaling the beginning of faculty layoffs due to cash-strapped institutions.
Deputy Prime Minister Prof. Stephen Kiama said the university will limit recruitment to key departments and cut more than 324 current courses, which are more focused on engineering, medicine and IT.
