Yesterday, several University Students comprising leaders were arrested while they were holding a press conference in one of the hotels in Nairobi.
They were later released on a police bond in the evening as indicated by a police officer.
The fifty six student leaders were drawn from different universities. They were arrested as they were holding a press conference at Chester House in Nairobi.
The university student leaders had called for a Press conference to voice their support for Azimio mass protests that is scheduled for Monday, March 20.
They were arrested and taken to the Central Police Station in Nairobi. Nairobi police boss Adamson Bungei claimed the student leaders had not informed the police that they will hold a press conference.
The Kenya Universities Students Organization condemned the arrest of the university students and called for the immediate release of their members.
In a statement, Kenya Universities Students Organization secretariat said the arrest and detention was unlawful, adding that the students have the right to freedom of expression.
KUSO said that the detained students had their rights violated.
The statement released read in part that, As an organization committed to the promotion of human rights, KUSO condemn this act in the strongest terms possible.
The student body called on the Authorities to release the students and ensure they are not subjected to any further harassment or mistreatment.
As an organization we also call upon the government to respect the rule of law and due process, and to ensure that all citizens, regardless of their political affiliation, are treated equally and justly under the rule of law.
Further, KUSO urged all parties to work towards a peaceful and constructive resolution to any differences that exist.
THE students body also asked the authorities to refrain from any actions that may further escalate tensions or lead to violence.
