Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service KUCCPS Chief Executive Officer has clarified that students who chose to pursue Technical and Vocational Education and Training courses within universities will not receive government scholarships.
KUCCPS CEO Wahome indicated that TVETSTVETS within universities were not included for the scholarships according to the new funding model.
However, KUCCPS CEO Wahome maintained that the option would be made available for students to know and choose. Some universities offering Diploma and Certificate courses have what we call TVET schools within the Universities. So candidates who will choose to pursue TVET courses in the university will not receive the scholarship.
On the other hand, students joining TVET institutions under the Ministry of Education, which include National Polytechnics and Technical Training Institutes would be eligible for government scholarships and loans.
The KUCCPS CEO said that there was need to clarify that TVETs are of two categories I.e those under university and those registered under the ministry so that as candidates decide to pursue Tvet courses within university they should be aware that they are not eligible for government funding and loans.
Agnes Wahome further said that the KUCCPS portal would open as from next week for 2022 KCSE candidates to select courses.
Revision of courses will be done in the month of June 2023 before university admission in September 2023.
President William Ruto noted last week that funding will be through government scholarships, loans and bursaries while announcing the new funding model.
The Funding model will ensure that no learner is left out with those joining University receiving upto thirty eight percent of the program’s cost through a government scholarship and 55 per cent in the form of loans.
They will only pay seven percent of the cost of their university education from their pockets.
For candidates joining TVETs they will get 32% from government scholarships, 48% for loans and 20% will be from their household contribution.
