SRC Approves Salary Increment for Some Civil Servants
The Salaries and Remuneration Commission has boosted the remuneration for county assembly speakers and MCAs in response to public outcry.
The action was taken a few days after MCAs, who had gathered in Nairobi for their first convention, decided to go on strike until their pay and benefits were raised.
The MCA’s gross monthly salarysalary has increased from Sh144,375 to Sh154,481 as part of the commission’s most recent evaluation of compensation for state and public employees, effective in July.
MCA would get a gross salary of Sh164,588 under the review, which will be implemented in two phases, in the fiscal year 2024–2025.
The gross remuneration for Majority and Minority leaders would grow from Sh144,375 to Sh191,324 in the upcoming fiscal year and to Sh204,717 in the following year.
Additionally, they will receive Sh62,400 for each committee they sit on each month as a committee sitting allowance.
As a result, starting from the following month, a Member of County Assembly who serves on just one committee will earn a gross pay of Sh216,881 as opposed to the present Sh206,775.
If a member serves on just one committee, their remuneration will increase to Sh226,988 starting in July 2024.
However, the majority of Members of County Assembly serve on two or more committees.
The Salaries and Renumeration Commission presentation to County Assembly Service Boards regarding the third public service salary and benefits review cycle for 2021–22–2024–25 contains the specifics.
MCAs’ salariessalaries had earlier been reduced by SRC from Sh165,000 as part of its efforts to reduce the public wage bill.
Members of the County Assembly are 2,232 in number. 782 of them are nominated, and 1,450 are elected.
A county assembly speaker’s gross compensation will increase from the current Sh525,525 to Sh562,312 as of July 1 under the proposed gross remuneration.
