Kenya Certificate and Secondary Examination students who will sit for their examination this month are yet to know their fate as the state Varsities plans on reviewing the minimum entry requirements or grade.
The dream of some students to undertake certain courses fade away by not achieving the minimum entry requirements that one has to attain to join colleges and universities.
The call for the review has come at a time when there have been many controversies on the university funding by the government.
Education Cabinet Secretary Mr Machogu had announced on Saturday that the government is likely to withdraw funding of university education. He Urged universities to come up with modalities that will enable them generate their own income.
According to the experts, the review will affect the current class as they will be on the receiving end. Additionally, the experts say the review is likely to go up from the current C+ so that the cost of government funding is lowered.
Many public universities are currently facing financial crisis with the teaching staff having to quit their jobs because they have not been paid their salary dues for a long period of time.
The financial crisis the universities are experiencing have been attributed to government not being able to remit the funding subsidy. This has largely been attributed to large numbers of students qualifying for direct university placement.
The review process was last done three years ago and therefore need to go through the process again.
Universities vice-chancellors, academic registrars and representatives of the professional bodies are expected to meet in due course where they are to discuss and review the entry requirements to the various courses.
More proposals are yet to be discussed in similar stakeholders meeting for middle-level colleges that will be held in weeks to come. Here the criteria for diploma and certificate courses will be reviewed.
