Students Risk Missing KNEC Exams- KUPPET Warns
The Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has warned that the KNEC may fail to discharge examinations this year due to a lack of funding.
Speaking on Wednesday, KUPPET said that even though the exams are three months away, KNEC has not received any cash from the government.
Union officials state that KNEC now receives no fiscal funding from the National Treasury.
Media reports corroborated the assertions by confirming that Njuguna Ndung’u, the Treasury Cabinet Secretary, named at least 24 areas that will be impacted by budget cuts in a July 5 circular.
Exam and invigilation fees were capped at 100% within the designated locations.
As a result, KUPPET issued a warning, stating that KNEC might decide to cancel this year’s exams.

Furthermore, as mentioned by KUPPET Chair Omboko Milemba, the test board may choose to charge parents additional fees in order to support the exams.
“It indicates that KNEC has two options: either they won’t conduct exams because they lack the funding; it is our responsibility to draw attention to this, or they will continue to charge the parents as they did in the past,” said Omboko Milemba, Chair of KUPPET.
The Union also bemoaned the state of uncertainty in the education sector over the invigilation of national exams, should they be held, due to financing concerns.
The Secretary General of the Union, Moses Nthurima, claimed that the government had not provided any guidance on what to do when the austerity measures were implemented.
Nthurima continued, “I’m not sure if the government wants to privatize exam administration or if they’re going to administer it online.”
Teachers kept complaining about Kenya’s austerity measures, saying that the budget cuts shouldn’t have an impact on the education system.
