Teacher Appraisal to Involve Tree Planting
The Government led by H.E President Ruto initiated planting of 15 billion trees by 2032, a move aimed at: reducing greenhouse emissions, stopping and reversing deforestation and, restoring 5.1 million hectares of deforested and degraded landscapes through the African Landscape Restoration Initiative which was launched on 22nd December 2022.
In line with the government tree planting initiative, Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu has said that more features should be included in teacher performance appraisal contract including planting and growing trees. All Heads of Institutions will now be part appraised based on the number of trees they plant in a school.
The Cabinet Secretary was speaking at Kametho Primary and Junior Secondary SchoolPrimary and Junior Secondary School in Rarieda, Siaya County when he visited the school. He said that this will mitigate the adverse effects of climate change.
Ezekiel Machogu noted that going on all the heads of Institutions will have an additional feature in their appraisal performance contract where tree nurseries, planting and growing must appear in the performance contract. This will apply for all the heads of Institutions right from primary to secondary schools of all status.
The Cabinet Secretary for Education said the ministry will be ranking the schools from the best performing school in terms of tree planting to the least. Machogu said there must be competition in that. He added that the Ministry is taking this matter seriously and the ranking will be done the same way we used to do ranking in performance in matters academics.
The Cabinet Secretary added that through the available resources such as land and human capital the country will grow and plant enough trees.
Machogu noted that by bringing tree planting competition to school levels the children will know how to plant trees and its importance.
