It is bad news for teachers following the court ruling on the case which was filed against Teacher Professional Development(TPD) modules. It is now clear that teachers must go back to class.
High Court gave an ok for TPD modules for it is the mandate of the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to design and implement the training program for the good of the education sector.
TSC announced the mandatory TPD modules for all teachers last week and teachers decided to move to court to see the scheme suspended.
However, the High court has ruled against their wishes. The judge said that they had no power to intervene in the role of TSC which is well defined in the Constitution.
According to the ruling, it is a blow to teachers for there is no option rather than preparing to go back to class for refresher training as directed by their employer.
Additionally, the court directed TSC to look for means of paying for the modules instead of teachers paying for the training program.
Last week, the commission said that teachers would pay Ksh 6,000 per module.
As things are on the ground the only hope remaining for the teachers on their case against TPD is Parliament. Already the case was presented in Parliament where the education committee was given seven days to decide if the training can be suspended.
