Junior Secondary Teachers to Down Tools over Delayed Salary. The teachers who missed their salary disbursement are threatening to down their tools when the schools reopen for second term as from next week on Monday.
According to Teachers Service Commission more than seventeen thousand (17, 800) intern teachers teaching Junior Secondary School have not received their monthly salary for the last three months after they were deployed in a move to tackle the issue of teacher shortage in schools.
The commission earlier blamed the delay in deployment of some teachers in institutions as expected on issues with salary processing. As at now only half of the Teachers teaching across the country in Junior Secondary Schools have received their monthly salary.
The teachers are among the thirty five thousand teachers (35, 500) who were recruited by Teacher Service Commission earlier this year to ensure a smooth transition for the new cohort of the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) Learners to Junior Secondary.
Nancy Macharia, Teacher Service Commission Chief Executive Officer, cited the late submission of required documents by the affected teachers as the cause of delayed payment.
Nonetheless, Macharia assured those still waiting for payment to remain patient as the commission plans to solve the issue this month.
Some teachers have gone for three good months without pay. However, a section of the Teachers were paid early enough leaving the cohort who did not receive their salary wondering which criteria was being used by their employer, Teacher Service Commission, on disbursing the money.
Come next week as Schools will be opening for Second term, it is not clear whether the plans for junior secondary teachers to Down Tools over Delayed Salary will push through or not.
The commission is urging the teachers to have patience as they must be paid for the services they are offering.
