Tension High, Businesses Closed, Learning Paralyzed Following Fresh Sondu Ethnic Clashes
Fresh Sondu Ethnic Clashes. Following the fresh attacks, tension is still high in the town on the boundary of Kisumu and Kericho counties.
Rekindled ethnic skirmishes broke out in the Sondu district near the Kisumu-Kericho border on Tuesday night, leaving three people dead and five more hurt.
The four male patients and one female patient are being treated at Nyabondo Mission Hospital for arrow wounds.
The attack also resulted in the axing of one teacher, who is now receiving medical care at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital.
There are rumors that the conflict started after someone was slain while attempting to steal animals from the Kisumu side and was arrested.
George Ombiri, the chairman of the Siany Sublocation Community Policing, called the event on Tuesday night sad.

Despite the presence of security personnel, Ombiri claimed that the neighborhood is still tense and that they don’t anticipate a quick resolution.
In order to prevent adolescents from crossing from the other end to terrorize their neighbors, he urged the county and federal governments to sit down and determine what is causing the clashes. He also suggested what could be done to ensure that action is taken against these kids.
“It’s awful that occasionally one of our citizens is killed while we have a functioning government and nothing is done. Our local ACC Darwin Orina has made a sincere effort but has been unable to come up with a permanent solution.
Security has been increased in the area currently due to tension between the two neighboring counties and calls for a long-term solution to the ongoing conflicts.
Among others, Kisumu county commissioner Allasow Hussein is in charge of the security force.
Orina warned those engaged by saying they have lost lives and do not want to see a repeat of the same. They will be detained and charged, he said.
Additionally, he asked locals on both sides to interact with the police so that they could work together to find a permanent solution to the conflicts.
“I want to reassure the residents of Kisumu and Kericho that the security is sufficient.”

Anyang Nyong’o, the governor of Kisumu, pleaded with the federal authorities to quickly capture criminals accountable for the Sondu violence.
Nyong’o expressed regret that there are ethnic skirmishes in Sondu at the Kisumu Kericho border even as the President is scheduled to visit the lakeside city on Friday.
The county security team arrived on the site in the morning to reestablish order and security in the region, as the governor had already stated.
Nyong’o continued by saying that it is well known that people are behind these events for motives that are incomprehensible to him.
He questioned why border disputes in Sondu were getting out of hand whereas those in other places had been appropriately resolved.
The attack was renewed, and the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers has raised worry that it is compromising the security of their teachers.
As educators, they demand safety and tranquility in the neighborhood, according to Awange.
He claimed that a previous deputy was attacked with arrows at one of the nearby schools last month, seriously injuring him and leaving him in need of treatment.
The security meeting in the sondu area was still going on when we went to press.
