TSC Gives Directives Minimum Weekly Lessons, Staffing, And CBE In Schools
In a circular, the Teacher Service Commission, TSC has given directives on the minimum number of weekly lessons a teacher in both secondary school and primary school can handle. TSC has also set the maximum administrative posts per school depending on the enrollment.
According to the TSC curriculum Based Establishment (CBE), the following regulations have been put in place:
- ADMINISTRATIVE POSTS
A single stream primary and secondary school will have one head teacher/ principal, one deputy, and one senior master/teacher.
A primary school with 10 streams and less than 4,000 students will have one head teacher, two deputies, and eight senior teachers.
A secondary school with 12 streams and a maximum of 2,100 learners shall have one principal, two deputies (one in charge of academics and the other in charge of administrative roles), and nine senior teachers.
- WEEKLY WORKLOAD PER TEACHER
A primary school teacher shall handle a minimum of thirty-five (35) lessons per week while the minimum workload of a secondary school teacher per week will be 27 lessons a week.
- NUMBER OF LEARNERS PER STREAM
A primary school class size will have a maximum of 50 learners while a secondary school class size will have a maximum of 45 students.
- DETAILS OF ADMINISTRATIVE POSTS PER SCHOOL CATEGORY
- SECONDARY SCHOOL PRINCIPALS
Secondary school principals are placed in different grades depending on the category of the school they are heading;
- Sub County schools and all-day schools
Principals appointed to head these categories of schools must have served as a deputy in grade D2 for a period not less than three years. This group of principals is in grade D3 (teacher scale-13).
- County schools (over 540 students)
Senior principals, grade D4 (T scale-14) head this category of schools. For one to be appointed to this grade, you must serve as a principal at grade D3 for at least three years.
- Extra County and National schools (over 1000 students).
This category of schools should be headed by Chief Principals of grade D5 (T – scale 15) and to be appointed to this grade, you must have served as a senior principal for a minimum of three years.
- DEPUTY PRINCIPALS OF SECONDARY SCHOOLS
- Sub county schools and all-day schools are headed by deputy principal III of grade D1; T-Scale 11. To be appointed to this grade, you must serve as a senior teacher (grade D5) for at least three years.
- County Schools with over 540 students should be headed by deputy principal II (grade D2, T-scale 12) and to ascend to this level, one must serve as a deputy principal III for a minimum of three years.
- Deputy Principal I (grade D3, T scale 13) will be in charge of the national and extra county schools of over 1000 students.
- SENIOR TEACHERS OF SECONDARY SCHOOLS
- Senior teacher/master III (C5, T scale 10) should be in charge of Sub County and all day schools. To ascend to this grade, one must serve as a teacher in grade C4 for over three years.
- Senior Master II (D1) should be in charge of county schools with over 540 students. To elevate to this grade, you must serve as a senior master III for at least 3 years.
- National schools and extra county schools should be headed by senior master I (grade D2, T scale 12). To rise to this grade you must serve as a Senior Master II (D1) for at least 3 years.
- HEADTEACHERS OF PRIMARY SCHOOLS
- Headteachers with grade D5 (T scale 10) should be in charge of primary schools with an enrollment of at most 1000 learners. To be appointed to grade D5, one must serve as a deputy head teacher at grade C5 for a minimum of three years.
- Senior head teachers (grade D1) shall be in charge of primary schools with over 1000 learners and must serve as Headteachers with grade D5 for at least 3 years after being appointed to this grade.
- DEPUTY HEAD TEACHERS OF PRIMARY SCHOOLS
- Deputy Headteacher II, grade C4 (T scale 9) shall be in charge of Primary schools with at most 1000 learners. To be appointed to this grade one must serve as a teacher in grade C3 for at least 3 years.
- Deputy Headteacher I, grade C5 (T scale 10) shall be in charge of Primary schools with at least 1000 learners. To be appointed to this grade one must serve as a deputy head teacher in grade C4 for at least 3 years.
- PRIMARY SCHOOL SENIOR TEACHER
- Primary schools with at most 1000 learners: senior teacher II, grade C2
- Primary schools with more than 1000 learners: senior teacher I, grade C3
