Universities licensed to offer law
The following universities have been listed by the government as licensed to provide legal education and offer law education programmes programmes.
In a notice released by Council of legal education Chief Executive Officer Mary Mutugi the licensing status of the institutions were made public as of June 30, 2023.
Institutions that have been licensed to offer a master’s in law are Strathmore Law School, Mount Kenya University, Catholic University of Eastern Africa and Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology.
The notice read in part that under the provisions of Sections 2, 8 (1) (b), 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23 and 48 of the Legal Education Act No. 27 of 2012, the following are the only licensed legal education providers and offer legal education programmes in Kenya as indicated respectively.
Additionally, the following institutions are licensed to offer Bachelor of Laws, Daystar University, Mount Kenya University, University of Nairobi, Kisii University, University of Embu, Umma University and Africa Nazarene University.
Chuka University, Moi University Egerton University, Kabarak University, Strathmore Law School, Maseno University, South Eastern University of Kenya and Jomo Kenyatta University also have valid licenses offering a bachelor in law.
The diploma in law programmeprogramme is offered by Mount Kenya University, Kisii University, Kenya Institute of Management and the Catholic University of Eastern Africa.
The purpose of the council is to promote legal education and training and provide high possible standards for legal education providers.
