Meru University has been closed indefinitely following student riots.
The students went on the rampage on Monday, March 6, over the sacking of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Romanus Odhiambo, forcing the institution to postpone the graduation that was scheduled for Saturday.
Acting VC, Prof Charity Gichuki, said the Senate closed the university following the unrest.
The students barricaded the Meru-Maua road and engaged police officers from the neighbouring Nchiru police station in running battles for hours.
Anti-riot police lobbed teargas to disperse the angry students who claimed that the removal of their VC was spearheaded by some local politicians out to install someone of their choice.
They demanded that Odhiambo be reinstated, despite being sent home by the Council.
Professor Odhiambo the embattled vice chancellor said It was very unfortunate that he is being accused of not performing according to expectations when he has made a lot of progress in the institution since 2018.
He also asked the students to stay calm as their concerns were being addressed.
