University Students from Multimedia University went on rampage today in the morning over several issues which they say need to be addressed by the university management.
According to one of the students some classes were not being attended to by lecturers – who have been complaining about not being paid by the university over the last five years. The student also complained of increased food prices in the university and a number of the students are yet to receive the money from Higher Education Loans Board.
University Academic Staff Union General Secretary confirmed that part-time lecturers in the university have not been paid since 2018. He added that it was no longer possible for these lectures to attend to their classes as usual hence the students were not being taught.
“How do you expect someone who has taught over 5 years without pay to come to work?” he asked. Lectures too have bills to pay and they have sacrificed to offer their services for the past five years without pay. Upto this point they can not continue teaching without the university paying them their dues.
The official who doubles as the union National Organizing Secretary urged the part-time lecturers to stay away until they are paid in full.
