University Vice Chancellor Professor Isaac Kibwage and other eight members of the the university council have been sentenced to one-month imprisonment after they were found guilty of contempt.
David Nderitu, Employment and Labour Relations Court Judge ruled that the nine disobeyed a court order that was issued on May 30, 2022 directing them to fully pay the salaries of Egerton University lecturers.
The nine will however not serve the sentence should each of them pay a fine of 100,000 shillings slapped on them by the court.
Judge Nderitu pointed out that the accused persons took the orders lightly and failed to engage the Ministry of Education at the expense of the lecturers.
A warrant of arrest has since been issued for two council members who failed to appear before the court for sentencing.
The case will be mentioned on December 15, 2022.
