The Media Council of Kenya has condemned the recent attack on three journalists in Kilifi County who were covering a protest against the County Government.
According to reports, Elias Yaa, of The Star Newspaper, Daniel Peshu, and Maureen Ongala of the Daily Nation were assaulted at the Karisa Maitha grounds on December 23 by staff attached to the Governor’s office.
The Council condemns the atrocious acts meted against journalists as they are a direct violation of press freedom as espoused in articles 34 and 35 of the Kenyan Constitution, MCK said in a statement.
The MCK has called for swift investigations and prosecution of the perpetrators, stating that the attacks are a “direct violation of press freedom” and a “criminal act” that goes against the rights and privileges protected by law for journalists.
The case has been reported to the Kilifi Police Station.
In the event that decisive action is not taken, the MCK has threatened to seek private prosecution of those found culpable.
The council has also reminded the public that any grievances concerning the behavior and practice of journalists should be reported to the Media Complaints Commission.
