A woman was charged before a Thika court for possessing and selling bhang to students at Witeithie estate in Juja, Kiambu county.
According to the prosecution team, the woman who appeared before Thika senior magistrate was nabbed by area chief and Nyumba Kumi officials while selling the bhang early this week.
The woman, Wanja, had 24 rolls of bhang wrapped in polythene paper and tucked in her clothes at the time of arrest according to the reports presented in court.
The woman did not deny the charges, Wanja pleaded guilty. However, she asked the court to be lenient on her because she did not do it willingly. She was forced by difficult times she is facing to do so.
She noted that she is a single mother of two and she has been enduring hardship to make ends meet for her family without a proper job.
She said that she wash clothes for residents within the estate and most of the time I don’t get jobs. This is why she began selling bhang to earn a living for her family.
Wanja said the illegal business earns her an extra coin that has enabled her to provide her family’s basic needs including food and school fees.
Wanja’s arraignment comes as the police in Juja subcounty tightens the war against crime and drugs, especially around Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, Kalimoni, Juja Farm, Mwireri, Witeithie and Muthaara areas
