Police have arrested some three people suspected to be involved in conning desperate parents a lot of money in Ndhiwa, Homa Bay County. The suspects are allegedly said to conned parents whose children are set to join Form One. They conned upto 300,000 shillings with a promise of sponsoring their children in secondary school.
The suspects which include one woman and two men who are operating a non-governmental organization known as Rising Star Organization, were arrested within Kobodo Trading Centre after the parents raised concern to the Directorate of Criminal Investigation Officers.
The alleged conmen who are the director of the organization, treasurer and a member of the organization had persuaded the needy parents from Ndhiwa earlier on that they can provide financial support to the students by paying their fee in different secondary schools.
According to a report at Kobodo police station, parents who gave their statements said they were asked to pay ten thousand shillings for a child who had scored 350 marks and above.
According to Ndhiwa Sub- County Police Commander Paul Rioba, at least thirty parents were conned by the said non-governmental rising star organisation leaders of which each was asked to pay 10,000 per child to receive the sponsorship.
The sub county police commander says the three have been arrested and are being held at Ndhiwa police station awaiting to be arraigned.
Ndhiwa MP Martin Owino condemned the incident and called on parents whose children are set to join Form One to be cautious to avoid being swindled.
The MP said his office is ready to support bright and needy students in the constituency through the NG-CDF, urging parents to apply for the bursary.
