A student of Kajiunduthi Secondary School, Muthambi ward in Maara constituency, Tharaka Nithi county has been found dead in the nearby River Maara.
The discovery of the body comes after the boys went on Strike on Monday night.
The student was found dead in the river near Kiriani shopping centre.Residents called the police who retrieved the body and took it to Chuka general hospital mortuary.
Geoffrey Gitonga Kiragu who is a guardian at the school where his grandson is a student said they did not get any information about the strike from the school despite police being called to contain the situation.
I was just called by another parent who has a child at the school. I went and picked up my grandchild and we were told to take them back to school by the administration that is when we got the news that one boy had died. The administration should have amicably resolved the differences, Kiragu said.
Kiragu said it was not human to let students scamper for safety.
Another parent at the school who did not want to be identified said he was called by his son when a student confronted the deputy Principal at about 9:30 pm after the evening preps.
The students said the school administration was being extra strict. Students jumped the school fence and ran towards the river after police were called to the scene. The police allegedly fired what is yet to be established if was a bullet or a teargas canister.
The students had been released to go home by the time of going to press.Maara Police boss John Ole Manei referred Journalist to Police County Commander Ngeno on the matter.
Tharaka Nithi County Director of Education Bridget Wambua said he could not issue any statements to the media as tension was building around the school.
The parent condemned the police for using excessive force.
