Ray of Hope as TSC Summons Teacher’s Unions
There is a new ray of hope for teachers regarding salary increments after their employer Teachers Service Commission (TSC) called for a meeting with the teachers’ unions.
The meeting is aimed at discussing the review of the 2021-2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
TSC in a memo dated August 15, 2023, signed by Director of Legal Affairs, Cavin Anyuor on behalf of the Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Nancy Macharia addressed the secretary general of Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) Mr Akello Misori inviting the union officials for a meeting scheduled for August 22, 2023.
“The meeting will take place at the Kenya School of Government (KSG), Lower Kabete, Nairobi,” the circular read in part.
Both teachers’ unions KUPPET and KNUT have been pushing for the review of the non-monetary Collective Bargaining Agreement signed in July 2021 which failed to include the salary increase for the teachers.
The 2021-2025 CBA only saw teachers get increased maternity and paternity leave days from 90 days to 120 and 14 days to 21 days respectively.
The CBA also allowed promotions of teachers in arid and semi-arid areas (ASAL).
However, TSC pegged the decision to disallow any salary increment for teachers to an advisory opinion from the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC).
Knut led through their Secretary General Collins Oyuu in recent months has been pushing for an increase in salaries by 60 per cent in the basic salary of teachers across all cadres.
The union decried the deteriorating quality of life for teachers whom it said have been suffering especially with the high inflation witnessed in the country.
On the other hand, KUPPET has been looking to push for a 42 per cent salary increase in the re-negotiation of the 2021-2025 CBA in the basic salary of the teachers in all the cadres.
