Bridge Collapse Killing 26 People on Spot
A bridge collapsed killing at least 26 people on the spot even as more people are feared missing as reported by an official after a railway bridge which was under construction collapsed in north-eastern India.
The incident took place around the town of Sairang, in the state of Mizoram.
According to local media dailies or reports close to, more or less, forty workers were at the site at the time of the incident, when a section of the bridge collapsed.
The railway authority has launched an investigation into the incident to determine its cause as it is not clear as of now. Three people however have been rescued so far from the scene.
The three includes one worker who was rescued from a 328ft high pillar. The injured worker had to be brought down from the top of the pillar.
The bridge that collapsed was over the Kurung River, about twenty kilo meters from the city of Aizawl, Mizoram’s capital.
The office of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a statement issued stated that all those affected are being given possible assistance in any way possible.
The statement further added that the government of India will pay some 200,000 rupees to the next of kin of all those who died.
According to officials from railway authority all the victims came from West Bengal.
Lalchamliana Mizoram’s Home Minister said no words can fully express the sorrow and sympathy to the families who lost their loved ones in the tragic incident.
The railway line Khamrang-Sihhmui will be completed in December and will be 51km long. It’s construction started two years down the lane.
Accidents on these kinds of construction sites are common in India.
