TSC More Interdicts Teachers Seeking Transfers From North Eastern Region.
The Teachers Service Commission, TSC interdicts more teachers who allegedly deserted duties.
The Teachers Service Commission’s interception of non-local teachers who requested transfers from North Eastern Kenya owing to insecurity has dealt them a serious blow.
Following a request from the commission for the teachers to report to their workstations in September, this has happened.
The impacted teachers, who accuse the TSC of exceeding its authority, have announced that they will camp out in front of the commission’s offices the next week while pleading with parliament to take action.
Kericho County native Geoffrey Kipng’eno Lelon works as a teacher in Mandera County. They have been detained by the Commission because they, along with many others, were unable to go back to their workstations because of the insecurity, as described by him and others.
The Nancy Macharia-led commission cited a breach of the Teachers Service Commission Act in letters sent to the affected teachers that were obtained by Citizen TV, saying: “I am directed by the Teachers Service Commission to say that, it is alleged that you have breached clause (b) (iv) of the Third Schedule of the Act in that: You deserted duty with effect from 09/09/2023 to date while teaching at Rhamu Day Secondary School.”
Another one stated: “I am directed by the Teachers Service Commission to say that it is alleged that you have violated clause (b) (iv) of the Third Schedule of the Act in that: You deserted duty with effect from 09/09/2023 to the present while teaching at Fincharo Primary School.”
As a result, you are hereby prohibited with effect from September 22, 2023, and this applies to all teachers who were under the TSC’s employ.
Because they feared retaliation from the hiring authority, some of the impacted instructors who wanted unanimity denounced the TSC’s decision.
“I was personally contacted at the TSC and instructed to just compile a list of people who had not returned. Then, to my amazement, the transfers turned into interdiction after I made the list. That is why we are so upset and perplexed,” a visibly upset instructor named Joseph remarked.

The teachers have been camping out at the TSC Headquarters for weeks, requesting to be shifted out of the area owing to the threat of Al-Shabaab terrorism and hatred from the local community.
The teachers say TSC has not bothered to address the issues they raise.
TSC highlighted a 7-point appeals process before making a decision in the instances in the letters it sent to the impacted teachers. It gave the following instructions to the professors who had been detained: They were given a 21-day window in which to present their defense, a chance to appear before the commission in person, and instructions to report monthly to the closest TSC sub-county.
Additionally, it requested that they leave their positions, submit contact information, including phone numbers, emails, and addresses, and forfeit any unused vacation days.
The teachers who were detained now claim they will demonstrate outside the TSC offices on Monday.
