Several students hospitalised over unknown illness
More than one fifty students from Amabuko Secondary School in Kisii were today rushed to the hospital over an unknown illness which some sources suspected to be food poisoning.
A reliable source familiar with the incident informed some media outlets that the first case was reported in the early hours of Monday, raising alarm over the quality of food served at the institutions.
The students were rushed to different hospitals including Keroka Sub-County Hospital, Ichuni Mission Hospital and Gucha Hospital after reporting severe abdominal pains and diarrhoea. Those who were in critical condition were rushed to kisii teaching and referral hospital.
In a statement, the area Rigoma Ward MCA Nyambega Gisesa noted that the response time was quick, even as the case comes just weeks after a similar one in Vihiga.
Following a suspected case of usage of contaminated water and food poisoning at Amabuko Secondary School, our medics at Keroka Hospital are offering services to the affected students.
The area MCA further stated that there are adequate medical supplies and well-trained personnel at keroka hospital who are handling the emergency.
Area residents who rushed to the institution to help with the evacuation believed that the poisoning was caused by a meal of beans and vegetables the students indulged in on Sunday night.
Experts have raised concerns over the quality of living in boarding schools as populationspopulations grow while investments in expanding infrastructure such as classes and dormitoriesdormitories remain low.
Most schools are currently facing several challenges related to poor sanitation with some struggling so much to meet water needs among other challenges.
The quality of food has also been questioned as the rising cost of living puts more pressure on school administrations amid a cash crunch.
