Malava Sub-county Records Highest Teenage Pregnancies
Teenage Pregnancies. With almost 2,900 girls becoming pregnant between 2023 and 2024, Malava has been identified as the top Sub-county with the highest frequency of teen pregnancies.
Due to this, a community-based organization (CBO) has decided to take the lead in educating and raising people’ awareness of the risks associated with sexual exploitation, gender-based violence, and HIV/AIDS to their daughters and families.
Speaking to residents at Namagara Market in Manda Shivanga Ward, Boda Boda CBO chairman Stephen Shitanda said that teen pregnancies are such a huge problem that it will take coordinated efforts from all parties to reduce them.

He explained that in order to reach out to the impacted people, they were collaborating with the Ministry of Health, Boresha Jamii, USAID, national government administration officers (NGAO), and community policing. Thus far, they had received positive feedback.
“Since we started our campaign to stop the threat, we have reached over 10,000 people who have not only gotten medical care and screening but have also been able to access other government services like birth certificates, KRA PIN, and NHIF, which have not been easily accessible at the grassroots level,” he stated.

The only way to help the impacted people return to normalcy is for other stakeholders to join the movement and provide the necessary services.

Teachers, parents and community members should take a collective responsibility to safe the girl child from early pregnancy.
