TSC Issues New Guidelines For School Principals/ Headteachers
The Teacher Service Commission (TSC) has set new guidelines and requirements for becoming a school principal or the headteacher.
The TSC head of corporate communications, Ms Wababu reported in a meeting that was attended by the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) and some KNUT officials that teachers who want to work in the capacity of headteacher or principal should attract a good record in both academic and social behaviour.
According to the new changes, teachers who appear to be applying for deputy leadership must be in a senior teacher leadership position for at least six years with an additional year on probation.
Ms Wababu further pointed out that the deputy headteachers want headship position should be more than 5 years in the present appointment, with a probationary period of additional two years.
The clause clearly states that to elevate headship in public institutions, they must have been in the profession for more than twenty years. This is something that seems unbearable.
TSC was reluctant to change any of the new regulations. The two unions raised some issues which suggested that if need be, it should expand where to add or subtract while maintaining the purpose of the above clauses.
