Why Top Universities are Not Interested in Offering TPD Modules
Top universities are not among the four universities that are to offer refresher courses for teachers except for Kenyatta university.
The four universities to offer refresher courses are Kenyatta university, KEMI, Mount Kenya University and Riara University.
Teacher Service Commission CEO Nancy Macharia says that the top universities did not apply to offer refresher courses despite the tender being open for all learning institutions.
The top Universities have been criticized sharply for not showing any interest in the teacher refresher courses that are to be offered.
This comes amidst complaints from the teachers questioning why only four universities were considered to offer the Teacher Professional Development modules.
Eight universities only applied for the tender to offer TPD modules out of which only four met the requirements that are mandatory for all institutions offering refresher courses.
Teacher Service Commission boss, however, added that the universities which did not apply will have another opportunity to do so after one when it shall be advertised.
Nancy Macharia said among the key requirements is that the institution must have a centre at all the sub-county levels because the refresher courses mandate that some be done face to face and not virtually.
The TPD training must be monitored and evaluation carried out continuously for feedback and to ensure quality.
From the reports, it also emerged that universities did not apply for the tender because they do lack some crucial documents like Kenya Revenue Authority tax compliant clearance.
