Two schools closed indefinitely as teachers are arrested over
Maranda high school and Rangala high school have been closed indefinitely following arson attacks that occurred yesterday. The two schools are located in Bondo and Siaya Counties respectively.
A teacher in one of the schools in Migori county has been arrested by the police over the unrest of students.
The teacher arrested is teaching at Taranganya Boys and the reason behind the arrest is the alleged involvement in students arson at the institution.
One thousand students of Rangala high school were sent home by the management to avoid the destruction of property after students insisted to be allowed to go for the holidays December was a festive season.
Stephen Onyango the school chairman board of management said that the students demanded to go home as they are not used to being in school this time of the year and became unruly.
The principal of the school tried to calm them, but they could not pay heed. After consulting with the board chair they reached an agreement to allow them to go home.
Even after giving in to their demands and being allowed to leave the school premises, some students vandalized CCTV cameras, broke windows, lighting points and even wanted to access the store where food is kept but did not succeed on that.
The school principal has a few names already for those who were actively involved in causing the fracas. The damage caused will be quantified and will be passed to all the learners on a basis known as pro-rata.
At Maranda High School on the other hand the school was closed indefinitely after the fire incident on Sunday that razed Owino complex second floor.
This comes two weeks after all the students in form four were sent home for allegedly threatening to burn down the school premises.
Taranganya Boys high school in Migori county, Kuria west sub-county, a teacher and one student are in police custody as they are alleged to have caused a fire that burn a dormitory down.
