KICD Releases Organization Of CBC From Pre-Primay To Senior Secondary.
The Kenyan Competency-based Curriculum (CBC) was designed by Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development in 2017 and has 5 levels which are:
1. Pre-primary Education (2 Years)
Pre-Primary 1 and Pre-Primary 2 commonly known as PP1 and Pp2 each taking one year.
SUBJECTS FOR PRE-PRIMARY (TWO YEARS) INCLUDE:
-Language Activities
-Mathematical Activities
-Environmental Activities
-Psychomotor and Creative Activities
-Religious Education Activities
NB: At this level, digital literacy and pertinent and contemporary issues will be integrated across all subjects.
2. Lower Primary (Grade 1 to Grade 3)
The lower primary takes a duration of three years. Grade three learners will sit for a national examination.
SUBJECTS FOR LOWER Primary (GRADE 1 TO GRADE 3) INCLUDE :
-Literacy
-Kiswahili Language Activities/Kenya Sign Language for learners who are deaf
-English Language Activities
-Indigenous Language Activities
-Mathematical Activities
-Environmental Activities
-Hygiene and Nutrition Activities
-Religious Education Activities
-Movement and Creative Activities
NB: ICT will be a learning tool in all AREAS. Pertinent and contemporary issues will be mainstreamed in all subjects.
3. Upper Primary (Grade 4 to Grade 6)
Takes a duration of the years with grade six pupils taking a national examination before transitioning to junior secondary schools.
SUBJECTS FOR UPPER PRIMARY (GRADE 4– GRADE 6) INCLUDE:
-English
-Kiswahili or Kenya Sign Language (for learners who are deaf)
-Home Science
-Agriculture
-Science and Technology
-Mathematics
-Religious Education (CRE/IRE/HRE)
-Creative Arts
-Physical and Health Education
-Social Studies
OPTIONAL SUBJECTS
Foreign Languages such as Arabic, French, German and Mandarin
NB: ICT will cut across in all subjects. Pertinent and contemporary issues and life skills will be mainstreamed in all Subjects. A pastoral program of instruction will be conducted once a week.
4. Lower Secondary (Grade 7 to Grade 9)
This level also runs for three years. Learners in this level will be categorised in junior secondary schools.
