Students Who Attained a Grade as Low as E in KCSE From Some Parts Of The Country To Qualify For Teacher Training in University
I Will Lower The Entry Grades For Teacher Trainees
Raila Odinga has promised to lower entry grades for teacher trainees for northern counties to address the shortage for teachers in the region.
Mr Odinga while speaking in Wajir county said that his government will apply affirmative action to make sure that the area gets adequate teachers.
Odinga said because of insecurity in the area there is shortage of teachers and to address the issue he will ensure that the youths are admitted to university or colleges to train as teachers even with Grade E.
Earlier on the push to lower entry grades for teacher trainees from marginalised counties was rejected by the government.
Mr Odinga said training of more teachers from the region would help bridge the gap since non-local Teachers are transferring from the area.
He said beginning September, all trained teachers who are yet to be employed shall all be employed. He added that insecurity has costed this region but affirmative action needs to be taken to salvage the situation.
Al-Shabaab militants hijacked a bus ferrying teachers in Mandera 2014 killing about 28 of them causing tension among non-local Teachers resulting to their exodus this shortage of teachers in the area.
Mr Odinga further promised that education will be free right from nursery to university.
