Three university students have been arraigned in court today on Monday for allegedly obtaining millions of shillings from parents of KCSE candidates in exam leakage scam.
The three Egerton university students Conned the the parents and the KCSE candidates through Telegram forums.
The said parents and KCSE candidates were Conned in the said exam leakage scam after they fell into the trap of the three students who promised to sell them examination materials for the forthcoming national examinations.
When the parents reported the lose of millions of shillings, KNEC detectives launched investigations into the scam last week leading to the arrest of the three.
The three culprits were based at the Egerton university main campus in Njoro in Nakuru County.
The mastermind of the exam leagake scam, Kelvin Anunda Mogaka with telegram user name ‘Prof Lenchodas was lured into a trap by the detectives on Thursday night.
The twenty-four-years old fourth year student pursuing Bachelor’s of science Education Mathematics and Physics was led to his house in Njoro by the detectives to his house for more information.
Mogaka was found living in a large and well furnished apartment.
The detectives found out that Mogaka owns two telegram groups with over 13,000 followers. It is believed that the scammers may have used these forums to con parents and several Candidates millions of shillings.
In the suspect’s, detectives recovered dozens of SIM cards and identity cards that the suspect had used to open fraudulent MPESA and bank accounts.
One of the Equity account Kisii bank was discovered to belong to Mogaka’s brother, a teacher at Mogongo girls Secondary in Nyamira North Sub-County, Nyamira County. The detectives also discovered that the suspect operated another KCB account Kisii Branch.
Further report indicates that the telegram groups were found with instructions on how members would make payments.
One of the message cautioned the interested in sending the money tobfollow the procedure given strictly to save time and void many stories for all the papers were readily available.
The detectives were informed by the kin of the suspect that Mogaka had earlier told him that won a jackpot after a successful bet and would be sending him money to put up a house for him at their home in Mosocho, Nyamira county.
The suspect led the detectives to two other accomplices Francis Manyara Ogata (telegram user name prof Ranchodas and Bravin Ombongi both fourth year students at Egerton University pursuing Bachelor’s of Arts in Education , Maths and Geography courses.
During the raid, the detectives recovered six mobile phones, ATM cards and eight identity cards all linked to the fraudulent telegram and bank accounts.
The suspects were released today after they were arraigned in Mililani lawa courts on bond.
According to the Ministry of Education and Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) elaborate mechanisms have been put in place aimed at upholding the integrity of administering the forthcoming KCPE and KCSE Examinations and to avoid cases of irregularities.
