TSC New Retirement Guidelines 2023
The Teachers Service Commission, TSC has released new retirement guidelines for teachers employed by the commission .
Last year a research which was conducted revealed that only a handful of people attain retirement age in good health.
According to the report released by the Institute for Public Policy Research and (IPPR) Future Health, most people will be afflicted by various debilitating diseases by the time they receive their pension pay, making it hard to enjoy their long-awaited retirement age.
In Kenya, the mandatory retirement age is 60 years for public officials while that for persons living with disabilities is 65 years.
This is after the Public Service Commission reviewed upwards the mandatory retirement age for civil servants to 60 years from 55 years in the year 2009.
The move was intended to cushion the public service from losing employees with essential skills while they are still productive.
However, TSC, the employer of teachers has given the following guidelines for teachers who might prompt early voluntary retirement
By reaching age 50 and completing 10 years of continuous service on Permanent and Pensionable terms, a teacher is eligible to apply for retirement.
Such a teacher must submit a retirement application through the institution’s head three months before to the desired retirement date.
If a teacher’s retirement is deemed to be in the public’s best interest based on his or her years of service, effectiveness in the classroom, and any other relevant factors, then he or she may be eligible for early retirement.
A female teacher who has been employed for at least five (5) years on P&P conditions and has subsequently gotten married may resign due to her marriage. If you have completed at least one month of pensionable service, you are eligible for a marriage gratuity equal to 1/12 of your monthly pensionable emoluments, up to a maximum of one year’s pensionable emoluments.
If a teacher is hired on a temporary or probationary basis, the Commission or the teacher can end the contract with one month’s written notice or by paying the other party one month’s basic wage in lieu of notice.
An teacher who has been hired by a government agency, a teachers’ union, a non-profit school, or a parastatal.
