Boom for teachers as unions seal salary deal with TSC
The Teachers Service Commission and the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET), Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT), and Kenya Union of Special Needs Education Teachers (KUSNET) have finally reached an agreement.
The organization added a clause to the 2021–25 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) with TSC to protect teachers from new statutory deductions and the high cost of living.
The union’s secretary general presided over the signing, which took place at the Kenya School of Government.

A basic pay review of up to 9.5 percent for the lowest-paid teachers and 2.4 percent for the highest-paid teachers are two financial advantages of the addition.
Backdating the pay rise to July 1st is planned.
The agreement calls for a review of the housing benefits provided to teachers who work in small towns and rural areas.
The agreed CBA states that instructors at Teacher Grade C2 (the entrance level for graduate teachers), C3, and DS will experience a boost in their basic pay of up to Sh4,164, Sh5,141, and Sh4,883 respectively.
Akello Misori, the secretary general of KUPPET, vehemently rejected the Salaries and Remuneration Commission’s proposed ceiling for teachers on Grade CS throughout the negotiations.
Once all the information has been given, the two parties will review the situation administratively, according to Misori.
Additionally, the dwelling allowance for teachers in rural and developing towns would increase, going from Sh2,100 for grade C2 to Sh8,700 per month.

“This comes after the geographical Clusters 4 and 3 were combined to determine dwelling allowances.
“KUPPET will continue to negotiate for full harmonisation of house allowances with rates for Nairobi City, as is the case in commuter allowances,” Misori added.
In addition to the base wage increase of between 30 and 70 percent, full harmonisation of house allowance was a major demand of teachers’ unions.
All instructors will receive their paychecks before the month is up, according to the TSC.
