Chiloba: SIM Registration only for A Specific Category Not All Kenyans
Chiloba has clarified that SIM registration exercise was targeting a specific group and that it was not meant for all Kenyans.
Registered Kenyans can only confirm their registration details by dialing *106#.
A petition has been filed seeking to stop the process whose deadline has been set as April 15.
The Communications Authority has clarified that the directive to register mobile lines will only affect unregistered lines and not all users of different network service providers, as was earlier considered.
The clarification comes in the wake of long queues seen at the shops of various mobile line dealers across the country where Kenyans had gathered for registration.
Communication Authority Director General, Ezra Chiloba, said Kenyans can verify their registration details by dialing *106# without having to visit an agent or other certified outlet.
Those who find that they have been registered have been advised to continue with their normal business.
The regulator had urged most customers having SIM cards for more than 10 years to visit their providers to update their data.
However, it indicated that most operators have recorded impressive compliance over the past four years.
Chiloba had already ordered all mobile network operators to expedite the data cleanup exercise, adding that no more time would be added.
The SIM registration exercise has seen a section of Kenyans express concern about the requirement that they provide the required information when registering their SIM cards for the first time.
A petition to stop the process has already been filed whose deadline has been fixed as April 15.
