Collins Oyuu apologize to teachers few days after signing new CBA
Collins Oyuu, the secretary-general of the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT), has now expressed regret for signing the contentious Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) a few days ago.
Oyuu bemoaned the current salary agreement, claiming that the most recent CBA amendments underpaid teachers.
“The most recent pay increase for teachers occurred in 2017.” Now that we have 10%, we will begin negotiations to obtain the remaining 50%. I stated to TSC yesterday that while we value the 10%, we want to begin a protracted legal struggle to get the 50%, said Oyu.
He claims that while the 2021–2025 agreement is still in effect, there is still possibility for more compensation increases.
In a 2021 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) covering the years July 1, 2021, and June 30, 2025, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and Trade Unions representing teachers in the public sector agreed to suspend the CBA’s monetary component and reevaluate the situation once the economy had improved.
In the agreement, the Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) demanded a 60% hike for its members, while the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) asked for a basic pay review of between 30% and 70% for its members.
TSC, however, is not prepared to provide teachers with this.
According to the commission, teachers in lower grade levels will get a wage increase of 9.5%, while instructors in higher grade levels would have a compensation increase of 2.4%.
According to the agreement, teachers would get a basic salary increase of up to 9.5% over the course of two fiscal years beginning on July 1, 2023.
Additionally, starting in July 2023, the housing allowance for instructors falling under cluster 4 will be paid over the course of two fiscal years.
The housing allowance for clusters three and four has thus undergone partial harmonization and will do so in full by July 2024.
Additionally, 14,738 teachers will be promoted in August 2023 under the new, modified CBA.
His comments follow the signing of an agreement to modify the 2021–2025 CBA between the teachers’ unions and the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).
Collins Oyu, secretary general of the KNUT, stated that what TSC is offering is not what was agreed upon but that it is the start of something during an interview with Spice FM.
