Court Bars IEBC from Printing Ballot Papers for Mombasa Governor Race
Reprieve for governor aspirant Mike Sonko as court has asked IEBC not to print ballot papers for Mombasa governor race until a final decision is made concerning Sonko being barred from vying.
A three-judge bench sitting in Mombasa law court has issued interim orders barring Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission from producing ballot papers for candidates in Mombasa gubernatorial race.
Olga Sewe, Ann Ong’injo’ and S. Githinji are the three Judges who issued the interim orders. They also issued conservatory orders preventing the IEBC from gazetting the names of the Mombasa gubernatorial candidates not until the pending hearing and determination of Mike Sonko’s application.
The former Nairobi governor applied for another hearing as he seeks to overturn IEBC’s Dispute Resolution Committee’s decision to bar him from vying for the governor seat in Mombasa county.
The judges also stopped Wiper Party from nominating a different candidate pending the hearing of the petition.
The three Judges were appointed last week by Chief Justice Martha Koome to hear and determine the petition.
The notice read in part that the honourable Chief Justice has received the original court file from Mombasa high court and has directed 3-judge bench to hear and determine the matter in Mombasa.
