Everything good has got its limitations. Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the use of face masks has become a daily routine in the world. This has even compelled the world health organisation to make the use of face masks compulsory to control further spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.
It is good to use masks but it is also good for you to be aware of the dangers associated with prolonged use of face masks.
1. Prolonged use of face masks can harm your skin and cause skin irritation.
Long hours of contact with the face mask with your skin are harmful to the skin and can also result in skin irritation. For example, health workers are subject to such effects because it forces them to put on their face for a long time daily.
2. Prolonged use of face masks can cause hypoxia.
When an inadequate supply of oxygen reaches the body tissues, the condition is referred to as hypoxia. Is so dangerous to your health when blood does not carry enough oxygen to the tissues to meet what the body requires.
Hypoxia is associated with heavy breathing, restlessness and fatigue and in extreme cases, this condition can lead to damage of your liver, brain and other body organs and organ system.
3. Prolonged use of face masks can cause an imbalance of the respiratory gases in the body.
In most cases, the carbon (IV) oxide gas exhaled can get trapped in the mask and then re-enters the body during inhalation causing an imbalance between the concentration of carbon (IV) oxide and oxygen in the body. Also when the person is wearing a must the amount of oxygen inhaled is less compared to that of a person not wearing a mask.
Prolonged wearing of face masks can cause suffocation due to the insufficient supply of oxygen in the body.
5. Respiratory Problems
Prolonged use of face masks can lead to respiration problems and heart attacks.
6. False sense of security
The use of masks can provide a false sense of security and in the end, putting you at risk of acquiring the virus because the mask only covers the nose and mouth leaving eyes uncovered being one of the entry points of the virus. Still, if you do not have simple hygienic procedures you can be at risk.
As the use of face masks is important, it is equally crucial to observe the following to avoid the dangers associated with prolonged use of face masks;
• When you are not in public places, stretch your mask and try to let in the fresh air.
• Stay at home or indoors if you do not have any important and demanding activities to accomplish. This can be the best way to protect yourself because you will not be required to wear a mask at this moment.
