The Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) has called off planed national strike ahead the national examinations scheduled to begin next week.
Kuppet Secretary General Akello Misori called off the planned teachers’ strike to a later date to enable examinations run smoothly. However, the the union boss asked the government to guarantee teachers security during the period of supervision of examinations countrywide.
” What we want the government to do as at now is to ensure teachers are secure especially those supervising examinations in conflict areas like Mandela, West Pokot among others” Misori said.
While addressing the press at Kisumu yesterday, Misori said that it remains the role of the government to ensure the teachers and students are secured from bandit attack during the examination period.
He added that some teachers who have been tasked to supervise and invigilate examinations in conflict-prone areas had raised some fear of insecurity following the recent attacks.
KUPPET had to threatened to down teachers after TSC failed to respond to their proposal of salary increment. The Teachers Service Commission on the other hardlast week wrote to the union’s officials warning them that the planned strike would disrupt the national examinations.
The teachers employer asked the union to join other education stakeholders to focus on the examination so that they can proceed smoothly without any interruption.
TSC lawyer Kal in Anyuor hinted that the commission is in consultation with other government agencies to review the union’s collective bargaining agreement demands.
The TSC layer further added that the 2022 year is delicate year with fizr terns and five national examinations hence if interupted will cause a lot of damage to education sector as the ministry seek to recover the time lost during Covid-19 break to normalize the academic calendar starting next year.
Education Cabinet Secretary Professor George Magoha had also appealed to the Union last week to call of the planned national strike to enable examinations run smoothly.
The union want the 2021-2025 CBA to be reviewed to effect 30 to 70 per cent salary increment for teachers among other proposals.
