Cabinet Secretary for Ministry of Investments, Trade and Industry Moses Kuria has announced that the government will allow importation of duty free maize for a window period of six months.
According to CS Moses Kuria, this is in efforts to help mitigate the food shortage in the country.
Moses Kuria Cabinet secretary for Trade said he will be signing necessary documents to allow for the importation of duty free maize.
The directive will allow importation of both GMO and non-GMO maize into the country.
Moses Kuria in his statement said in view of the current food situation in the country, he shall sign the requisite instruments to allow duty free importation of GMO and non GMO Maize for the next 6 months.
The ban on genetically modified organisms was lifted by President Ruto after his inauguration. The move open room for cultivation of genetically modified crops and the importation of food crops and animal feeds produced through biotechnology innovations.
The government said that this would be a quick way to deal with the ravaging drought in some parts of the country, which has affected at least 23 counties.
