The rate at which young boys and girls are dropping out of school in the country is worrying. There are many youths who willfully leave school on flimsy grounds.
It is sad to see youths idling at home after quitting school for no good reason. Such young people can be easily swayed and ensnared with vices that can consequently ruin their lives.
Children can drop out of school due to varied reasons. The majority of learners who quit school come from poor families and inability to meet school fees demands, some of them decide to discontinue their education due to forcing circumstances.
However, there are some who are just naughty while others are influenced by their peers. For girls, some leave school because of early marriage and pregnancies.
The bitter part of it all is when you find many parents of this generation lack the urge will to insist that their children stay in school.
Some school dropouts when asked why they made such a decision they reported they prefer to direct their efforts to do menial jobs rather than studying. They wallow in poverty as their counterparts achieve great feats thanks to education.
What is the future of school dropouts? Where can they secure jobs to earn a living without papers?
The only way is to subject them to informal training. Rather than staying idle in their homes, there are several short-term courses they could learn like mobile repair, CCTV installation, hair and beauty, digital marketing, and electrical works to enable them to earn a living.
The government has established several technical and vocational training institutes across the country where these school dropouts can be encouraged to join and get equipped with various skills.
We should therefore join hands and work together to organize youth forums in our communities to enlighten the young people to realize the importance of education.
How can we help the school dropouts that are staying idle in their homes?
