JSS Teachers Retooling Stalls In Nairobi After Arrest of Their Spokesperson
Junior Secondary Schools, JSS teachers retooling organised by Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has stalled in most of the centres in Nairobi after their spokesperson Boniface Omari was arrested by the police at Jamhuri Primary School.
The retooling has stopped, according to a statement received by Education News that was delivered to the Kenya Primary Schools Head Teachers Association (KEPSHA) by one of the Curriculum Support Officers (CSO) who was on site at Jamhuri School.
TSC officers are awaiting the next action, according to the CSO. “The TSC authorities are waiting for the next step while the retooling has halted.
I can only sit and watch because I’m the only one deployed in the room,” the statement said in part.
In contrast, the JSS intern instructors called for the release of their representative and threatened not to participate in the training that is being conducted in various centers.

Omari was arrested after releasing a statement in which he demanded that JSS intern teachers reject the return-to-work formula that a portion of the JSS intern teachers’ representative with the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) signed on Saturday, June 1.
In the statement, Omari called the KUPPET representatives betrayers and insisted that the JSS intern teachers strike was still ongoing.
He disclosed that the union cannot claim to have withdrawn the show cause letters that have previously been contested in court, nor can they claim that KUPPET is their employer and that they may sign any return to work formula with them.
The leaders maintain that their demands, which include the confirmation of 46,000 intern teachers, and that any agreement or deal must involve the appropriate parties—that is, the TSC or Parliament through the Labour Committee—through their association, the Kenya Junior School Teachers Association (KEJUSTA), of which Daniel Murithi serves as the Secretary General and Omari as the Spokesperson.
The National Leadership hereby calls upon moguls to disregard the shoddy papers written by unknown people herein referred to as betrayers and to only accept communication through the Secretary General Daniel Murithi and the Spokesperson Omari Omari in response to the betrayal of moguls by a portion of the leadership.

We were summoned to a meeting on Saturday, which is Friday, May 31, 2024, and given gifts totaling KSh 30,000 apiece in exchange for calling off the strike under false pretenses.
Rejecting the offer, we insisted on meeting our employer, who bears responsibility for any agreements of that nature that align with our requirements.
But we were startled to see a false statement released by KUPPET and some individuals posing as our leaders,” he stated in the statement.

Omari went on to say that they have spoken with their legal counsel and continue to believe that attending classes without a formal agreement is suicidal in light of the demands made by the intern professors.
He has therefore advised all JSS teachers to hold off until their scheduled meeting with the Labour Committee later this week, stressing that the strike would not end until a formal agreement is signed.
TSC had declared that the training of trainers (ToTs) would begin on May 20 and end on May 30, 2024. After that, the trainers were to retrain the JSS intern instructors in various locations across the chosen sites starting on May 27 and ending on June 6, 2024.
