The ruling Jubilee Party has been suffocated in Nairobi after at least 18 MCA’sb defected and joined Vice President William Ruto’s party, UDA.
These include nominated MCAs Joyce Muthoni, Susan Makungu, Ann Thumbi, Leah Ntimama and Sylvia Museiya.
Those elected through the ruling party but have defected include: Pangani MCA Peter Wahinya, Antony Kiragu (Waithaka), Mark Mugambi (Umoja 1), Waithera Chege (South B), Chege Mwaura (Ngara), Maina Njoka (Kariobangi North), Elija Mbuthia (Njiru) and Pius Mbono (Zimmerman).
Others include Kasarani MCA Antony Ngaruia, Geoffrey Nganga (Mwiki), Paul Ndung’u (Pumwani), James Kiriba (Riruta) and Kawangware MCA Fredrik Njogu.
The MCA is said to have paid the nomination fee for various posts in the elections to be held on August 9, 2022.
Male candidates paid an enrollment fee of 50,000 shillings for the post of MCA on UDA ticket, while youth and female candidates paid half the amount.
Candidates seeking MP position require 250,000 shillings for male candidates and 125,000 shillings for female candidates and youth.
Umoja Forest Ward representative Mark Mugambi commended his colleagues for the switch, saying they made the right choice.
“Some of us have been with DP since day one and have been in UDA since its launch. But now the Nairobi camp has grown and we are very strong.” Mugambi said. He is seeking a second term.
Waithaka MCA Kiragu said he stepped down after consultations with his voters.
He explained that the defection is based on the ideology of the UDA party and their aspirations for the Vethaka people.
“I have come to the UDA party because we share ideology with Ruto, which is in line with the demands of the voters,” Kiragu said.
As a second term MCA, Kiragu said that he was confident of getting a third term because of his development track record. He expressed confidence that DP Ruto would win the next election.
Earlier this week, over 40 MCAs from Meru and Tharka Nithi counties had also joined the UDA.
