List of Universities Licensed to Offer Law Courses
Mount Kenya University and Strathmore University are the private universities top on the list that are licensed to offer Masters in Law.
Council of Legal Education Secretary Dr Kituku Wambua said Mount Kenya University and Strathmore University have been licenced to offer Masters in Law adding that their licenses are valid till November 2026 and November 2024, respectively.
For Bachelors degree programmes, the Council of Legal Education listed 12 universities with a valid license to offer law, valid for different timelines.For instance, the Kabarak school of law and Egerton Universities have their license for Bachelors programme valid until June 2026.
At the moment University of Nairobi School of Law parklands campus, Africa Nazarene, Moi and Chuka have their licenses which are valid till 2025 December.
License for Umma University is valid till 2025 September while those of Kisii and Embu University schools of law are valid until 2024 April.
Daystar School of Law Valley Road campus, Mount Kenya and University of Nairobi, Kisumu School of law degree programmes are valid until July 2023.
Diploma programmes are valid in only three universities according to Council of Legal Education. These are Mount Kenya University, Kisii University school of law and Kenya Institute of Management.
At least ten universities have pending application awaiting to be licensed or for their licenses to be renewed so that they can offer legal education.
Catholic University of Eastern Africa seeks to offer Bachelors degree in law as well as Masters and diploma programmes.
Kituku said the application For the proposed Masters and diploma programes at CUEA is complete and under review.
Other pending applications are for Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) for Bachelors and proposed Masters, Strathmore University for Bachelors programme, UoN Mombasa School of Law and Kenyatta University School of Law Parklands campus.
