Human Rights Group Want Students Bursaries Stopped in Nakuru County
The lobby group has petitioned the Nakuru County to stop the executive from issuing bursaries to Students.
The group accused the executive of unlawfully issuing bursaries. The petition cites the Constitution, which provides that the issuance of bursaries falls under the national government.
The petition states that county governments are only allowed to issue bursaries to technical institutions and ECDs.
The petition read in part that it has come to our attention that the county executive has been issuing bursaries thus overstepping the functions of the national government.
The lobby wants the assembly to stop the county from issuing bursaries.
The group has threatened further the executive, ministry and the county assembly that they will sue them if their concerns are not looked into.
This is the second petition, after an earlier one to the Director of Education in Nakuru and the bursary committee dated September.
Joseph Mbugua, head of department in charge of bursaries, acknowledged that the county assembly was restricted to issuing bursaries to ECDs and TVETs only but MCAs passed a motion, allowing the executive to issue bursaries to all levels.
