Members of Embu County Assembly have suspended all the sittings in the county protesting poor salaries and failure by the government to review their remunerations.
The MCAs in the Governor Cecily Mbarire administration have vowed not to have any sitting until their grievances are heard saying their move to down their tools is in line with the resolutions that were made on May 3, 2023, when the association of members of county assemblies met at Kenyatta International Conventional Centre.
While addressing the press after the members adjourned the plenary sitting on Wednesday, May 31, 2023, Mbeti South Member of County Assembly Murithi Kiura said that they used to receive one hundred and twenty three thousand as their monthly salary but that it has now been reduced to eighty six thousand shillings saying the Members of County Assemblies s have more responsibilities to undertake.
“We used to receive fuel mileage for our vehicles but now we are forced to go to the assembly using Probox because we cannot afford fuel,” he said.
The MCAs are also pushing for Ward Development Fund and County Affirmative Action Fund for nominated Members of County Assembly.
The motion which was moved by Kiambere Member of County Assembly Lenny Masters at the same time seeks the reinstatement of payment of mileage allowances for Ward Representatives who hail from far-flung areas in the interiors of the county as well as sitting allowances for plenary sessions.
Mumenji Ward member of county assembly while supporting the motion stated that the suspension of the sittings will open doors for more consultations with various offices concerned in order to come up with amicable solutions to their grievances.
