New Taskforce Formed To Promote Development Of Miraa Industry
The government has come up with a new taskforce to promote the development of the Miraa industry and spearheaded the marketing of Miraa locally and internationally.
Fred Matiang’i said that the new team will be made up of officials from the national and county governments. The team wi be geared towards promoting the produce of Miraa within the country and outside the country.
The team shall also have a mandate to handle the challenges affecting the miraa farmers and will take over the implementation of the report that will be provided by the people assigned to work on the development of the Miraa Industry.
Interior CS also promised to work closely with the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (Nacada) to minimise the harassment of miraa traders and farmers in Meru and Embu.
According to Matiang’i, NAKADA works the ministry of the Interior therefore he promised to ask them to revise their positions and stop harassing miraa farmers and traders.
Yesterday the National Miraa Scientific Conference which was organised by the Meru County and the Kenya Medical Research Institute was held at the University of Nairobi and is ending today.
The conference was assigned to discuss the latest scientific research on Miraa, challenges facing the sector and how to improve miraa quality.
The miraa farmers are under the leadership of Governor Kiraitu Murungi and Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya. The miraa leaders laid blame on the regulatory bodies preaching against miraa and miraa farming.
Kiraitu cited the research institute has established that miraa is not a drug just but a stimulant.
Trade Cabinet Secretary Betty Maina said that talks are on targeting new markets in the DRC, Djibouti, Mozambique, Yemen and Israel.
