Sources have revealed that not all workers will receive a 12 per cent salary increment that was announced yesterday by President Uhuru Kenyatta during Labour day.
President Uhuru Kenyatta has announced a 12 per cent increase yesterday in the minimum wage effective Sunday, May 1. The announcement caught the attention of many Kenyans both employed and unemployed for the good news amidst harsh times when the economy of the country is bitting.
The teaching flaternity was not left behind after the announcement of the good news. For instance, a Geography and Business teacher left many Kenyans in stitches after saying that is going to marry a second wife following President Uhuru Kenyatta’s announcement on a 12 per cent salary increment.
However, the sources have revealed the move was misinterpreted to mean that all Kenyans will receive a pay rise, when only a given section is meant to receive pay rise.
According to a publication published by Standard on Monday 2, the only workers who will receive a pay rise include cooks, gardeners, cleaners, housekeepers, janitors and messengers.
If this is the case, then it means that these workers will get a salary increase of Ksh 1,629 from this month.
For example, the low wage worker earning ksh 13,573, will by the end of this month receive a salary of sh 15,202 after a 12 per cent increase.
However the salary increase depends on the current working and living conditions of the workers.
