Parents have thanked the public and the police for their quick response to arrest rogue college students who went for a drinking spree in Mwembe estate in the outskirts of Kisii on Monday evening.
Kisii County Chief Security Officer Amos Ombasa said his officers acted on suggestions from the public to arrest the wayward students.
He said that 4 of the students had been from St. Joseph’s Nyabigena Secondary School, three were from Nduru Girls Centre of Excellence in South Mugirango Constituency and one lady was from Kisii National Polytechnic.
He similarly published that the students have been taken to Kisii police station for more interrogation and that their parents had been notified of the arrest.
Upon regaining his senses, one of the boys advised the police that they had taken illicit brew, chang’aa, before proceeding to Kisii town for a drinking spree.
The incident comes barely a month after Kisii Open Air Traders Chair Jane Matiabe decried the rampant instances of drug abuse amongst college students in the town.
“Water providers use empty water bottles to pack chang’aa which they sell to college students without the awareness of the police,” she said.
Matiabe called for a thorough crack down of the drug peddlers in the town and arrested as they need to face the law.
She revealed that the areas and place where drug abuse is rampant are St .Judy street, Golf residence lane, the lower back streets of Hema Hospital, Mwembe estate, Erera, Egesa Kiogaro and Nyambera quarry mines.
Area residents condemned the acts by using the college students and expressed worry of the students’ future if they do no longer change their ways.
