*Senator kicked out of Parliament for wearing blood stained suit*
A drama was witnessed in Parliament after a Nominated Senator was kicked out of senate session for putting on an outfit stained with blood. She was wearing a white suit.
Gloria Orwoba nominated senator was compelled to give a notice of motion on free sanitary towels aimed at ending period poverty.
The Senator claimed that she was asked by the speaker to leave the premises and put on a ‘decent’ outfit.
To her the incident was humiliating because she was asked to leave Parliament for such a natural accident.
We talk about period stigma all the time but experiencing it in Parliament was a different thing,’’ she said
Ms Orwoba says that experiencing period stigma in Parliament was the last stroke she needed to champion a motion that would guarantee provision of free sanitary towels for girls in primary and secondary public schools.
The Senator has been vocal on ending period poverty and stigma associated with it. Her proposed law also seeks to create awareness on menstrual hygiene by including it in the curriculum.
The lawmaker argues that the initiative she pushing for is dependent on budgetary allocations and this will ensure that every girl gets the free sanitary towels every month. To her this will be different from the current free sanitary towels program.
The current programme does not state the number times of provision, hence government provides what they can depending on what they have.
