Lamu police have arrested a 17-year-old who fatally stabbed a fellow student at their school in Lamu East on Monday.
The suspect, Mohamed Idarus, was flushed out from a house he was hiding in at Tchundwa village on Wednesday evening.
Lamu County Police Commander William Samoei confirmed that the suspect is being held at the Kizingitini police station where he is being interrogated following the attack.
The suspect had fled shortly after stabbing Mohamed Bakari, a Form Four student.
The incident happened during morning hours with witnesses saying the assailant drew a knife which he had tucked underneath his shirt and went on to stab the deceased several times.
The deceased bled to death shortly after that while the suspect is said to have fled.
The school has since been shut indefinitely and students sent home following the unrest that ensued following the incident.
The deceased was laid to rest that same day on Monday at the Faza Town cemetery as per Muslim traditions under tight security.
The county commissioner said the suspect now faces murder charges and will be arraigned any time from now.
“We have arrested the suspect and are holding him at the Kizingitini police station where he is being interrogated. We intend to have him arraigned soon,” said Samoei.
Tension remains high between Faza village where the deceased hails from and the assailant’s village of Tchundwa in Lamu East.
The warring groups had thronged the schools and began fighting before the police were called in.
The community is calling for justice for the deceased.
Lamu county education director Joshua Kaaga said the school may reopen next week.
