Wamalwa Sends a Warning To Kenya Against Siding With Israel or Palestine
Former Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa has warned Kenya against siding with either Israel or Palestine in the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict.
Thousands of deaths have been reported in Israel and Palestine as a result of a major, well-coordinated attack by Hamas militants that began early on Saturday.
The former CS suggested that Kenya call for peace in a statement on Monday.
“Kenya should not take sides and stand with Israel or Palestine in the escalating Middle East war, but should call and stand for Peace,” he stated.
He declared that the two-state solution will be put into practice in an effort to bring about peace between the two nations.
“l concur with the head of the African Union boss Moussa Faki Mahamat, Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni and South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa that the path to lasting and sustainable peace is the implementation of the two-State solution,” he stated.
Wamalwa’s thoughts are in sharp contrast to those of President William Ruto and the head of the AU, who each took a position in the war and supported a certain side.
Ruto firmly decided to support Israel, whereas Mahamat said that the conflict arose from the Palestinian people’s being denied their basic human rights.
His comments were taken to mean that the AU supported Palestine.
Ruto noted that Kenya does not support terrorism in a statement he released on Saturday, denouncing the attacks carried out by a group of Palestinian terrorists affiliated with the Hamas party.
“Kenya joins the rest of the world in solidarity with the State of Israel and unequivocally condemns terrorism and attacks on innocent civilians in the country,” Ruto stated.
Faki urged all sides “to return, without preconditions, to the negotiating table to implement the principle of two States living side by side” .
“The chairperson wishes to recall that denial of the fundamental rights of the Palestinian people, particularly that of an independent and sovereign State, is the main cause of the permanent Israeli-Palestinian tension,” stated the statement.
Palestinian militant organizations launched a well-coordinated air and ground strike against Israel during the morning attack on Saturday, catching the nation’s security agencies off guard.
The militants crossed the border between Israel and Gaza using makeshift paragliders, and from there they unleashed their strikes.
Over 1,000 people have been killed by Monday night as a result of an estimated 7,000 rockets being shot into Israel from various locations.
According to Palestinian sources, around 400 people were killed by Israel’s retaliatory assaults and rocket-propelled artillery fire into Gaza bases.
